Even though the Gala is a charity event, not just anyone can buy a ticket, but there are some ways to get on fashion’s most-hyped RSVP list. Since 1995 Vogue Editor and current Met Gala organizer, Anna Wintour has carefully curated her 700 person list.
Being a celebrity isn’t a ‘Prada shoe in’ invite, there are fashion houses who buy tables to the event, which can cost anywhere from $75,000 to $250,000 depending on the size of the brand and its relationship with Vogue. These fashion houses then ‘invite’ celebrities to sit at their table and then dress their celebrity guests in their brand. It’s a win-win, the celebrities get an invite and the brand gets an A-list celebrity wearing their design.

If you don’t own a fashion house and you’re not dating an invited celebrity, your next best chance of getting invited to fashion’s most talked about event is to work for one of the Met Gala’s corporate sponsors.
These household names sponsor the Met Gala therefore some very lucky employees will get to attend fashions most talked about event.

Finally, if all the above fail, there is also the old fashioned way: donate a whole bunch of time and money to the Metropolitan Museum of Art through the years and hope your efforts are recognized.

This is really fascinating to see how much it costs and how it is just an event of rich people flaunting their rich but it is being justified as fundraising for the museum. I wonder if it is enough justification for a clearly shallow event.

Wow Christie, this is a really interesting topic! I’ve never really been one to explicitly follow the Met Gala, but I’ve always enjoyed seeing the social media posts about the biggest celebrity looks of the night. I’ve seen some celebrities wearing some crazy things (Kim K’s all black suit?!) and always thought the outfits were something they bought themselves and chose to wear. It’s interesting to find out that the celebrities are essentially “bought” by expensive brands and told what to wear, so the expensive brands can showcase their work in front of hundreds of other rich celebrities. I also didn’t know that it was a charity event! I’m excited to follow your inquiry journey and learn more about the Met Gala with you! Thanks Christie!

Hi Christie!
I love that you’re doing the met gala as your topic because I’ve always been curious about it! I love seeing all the different outfits and how each designer interpreted that years theme. I never knew how certain people got invites and others didn’t so this was a very interesting read for me, thanks for sharing!

Hey Christie!
First off, your inquiry project = INCREDIBLE. I am having so much fun reading your posts about the MET Gala!
I knew that fashion houses bought tables but I had no idea that corporate sponsor employees could also attend! I wonder if they go out and spend enormous sums of money on costumes and hair or if they simply raid their costume closet and throw together an outfit? I’d love to see a table of Amazon employees decked out in outlandish glam!
Thanks for picking such a fun topic, I look forward to reading more posts!
Cheers!

Hey Christie! This is such a cool topic, and something I had never thought about! I was recently listening to Emma Chamberlain’s podcast, Anything Goes, where she discussed being invited to her first MET Gala to interview attendees for Vogue. The whole time I was listening I was thinking about how surreal that would be, but assumed that would never be a possibility for me. Although it’s still a long shot, I at least know that it could be in the cards if I decide to marry a celebrity or leave behind the career of teaching to go work for Amazon.
